Contract extension: things get stuck between Deandre Ayton and the Suns

Like Luka Doncic, Michael Porter Jr, Trae Young and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Deandre Ayton is part of the very strong 2018 Draft, and like them, he intends to initial a contract extension at the maximum salary. That’s a five-year, $ 172.5 million contract, with the potential to hit $ 207 million based on individual rewards in the upcoming season. For his team, extending it would be the assurance that he will not test the market in 2022.

After the 2021 playoffs and the performances of the young interior, it was thought that it would be a formality but ESPN reports that the discussions are at a standstill. On the one hand, Phoenix does not want to offer him the maximum salary. On the other hand, Deandre Ayton believes he deserves the same contract as Doncic, Ayton, Gilgeous-Alexander and Porter Jr. Both parties have until October 18 to reach an agreement, otherwise the pivot will be a free agent protected in a year. Nothing to be alarmed about as Phoenix will always have the upper hand, lining up with any outside offer, but that's obviously a bad sign as the franchise wants to do better than last season.
